Vinesh Phogat Disqualification Appeal Updates, Paris Olympics 2024:

Vinesh Phogat's final effort to secure a medal for herself and the country at the Paris Olympics unfolds today at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), just two days after the Paris 2024 games officially concluded.

Vinesh was disqualified from competing in the final of the 50kg weight class due to exceeding the permissible weight limit by 100 grams. Following this, she announced her retirement from the sport but decided to challenge the disqualification in court. With the support of the Indian Olympic Association, Vinesh approached the CAS, seeking to be awarded a shared silver medal. Currently, Sarah Hildebrandt from the USA holds the gold medal, while Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, whom Vinesh defeated in the semi-final, was directed to compete for the gold against Hildebrandt and ultimately secured the silver.

In the repechage rounds, Yui Susaki of Japan, who was earlier defeated by Vinesh, overcame Oksana Livach of Ukraine to win a bronze medal. In the bronze medal match, Feng Ziqi from China defeated Otgonjargal Dolgorjav to claim the other bronze.

Vinesh Phogat, along with her legal team and the IOA, argues that she had met the weight requirements on the first day of the competition when she advanced to the 50kg final.

If Vinesh Phogat's appeal at CAS is successful today, she may be awarded a joint silver medal with Yusneylis Guzman Lopez.
